16-Apr-2008 01:04 (mudtime) posted by Liria: Ivan has posted the release of the HM quest. Here are his statements in RN:

First off, let me thank the few of you who were patient with me. To the rest of you, I understand. =)

The HMQuest is done and will be opened in a few moments. There have been some changes to the original plan, however. Initially, the quest was this huge cheat-resistant project that would really test the questor. Unfortunately, the plan was bigger than I anticipated. After a year or two (or 8) I had a quest that was pretty ready to go but I realized the upkeep would have been at least as daunting as the original coding.

Rather that retooling it so that it was more managable while still being as awesome as it was, which have no doubt required a few days of coding, I decided to go in a new direction. The quest is significantly shorter. It will test a persons knowledge of the mud but will not include what we generally consider "questing." I'm sorry to the HMs who got their rank the old way, since this is no
where near what you guys went through.

I decided it was more important to the mud to lift the artificial cap on playing than to maintain the super elite status of HM. I will revisit my rewrite of the quest if I get the time.

Ivan
[After a bug fix:] It's back up. There is no limit to how many people can quest per boot. There is a 20min interval between each attempt per person, though.

What is SWmud?

Star Wars mud is a heavily modified LPmud based on the Star Wars Universe. SWmud is not a role-playing MUD, though role-playing is not forbidden as long as it is within the rules. We do not have a particular theme or time period on which we are based, though most of the MUD is roughly set during the original trilogy of movies and a few years of the Expanded Universe thereafter. We have around 40 planets and space stations coded, averaging between 150-200 rooms each, with some areas nearing 1000 rooms.

Characters are based on five attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Technical, Mechanical, and Force. Also during creation you will choose 1 of 22 races and 1 of 3 teams: Imperial, Rebel, or Neutral. We also have 10 guilds and you choose up to 3 of them, with the ability to choose a fourth after you attain certain levels. After you create, you have the option of running through our Newbie School (recommended for brand new players to SWmud). We also have a Newbie Line for new players to ask questions, to be answered by the wizards and more experienced Newbie Helpers. We also have an extensive set of panic (help) files which players can use to look up most of the gameplay information themselves - all of these help files are also available on our website.
